To the jungle? or the beach? what about both?

Oh hey hi, what up (trendy speak that). So what news your end? Trust all is just dandy. Here we have been enjoying a couple of days at a beach resort on the coast of Vietnam, quite simply a great place. All food is included and very tasty. We have ample space in our rustic beach huts and the water is bath warm and clear, what else do you need? Oh yeah, wifi, well they have that too! Place is run by a Canadian guy who it turns out lived about 10 miles from the Canadians on our trip. So here I am typing and the complimentary fruit has just turned up....how can it get any better? Maybe with a few of the cocktails inside me that we are having on the beach in about an hour...the Odyssey cocktail competition is up and running.

So that is where we are but where were we? Last post saw us in Hue from where the guys took the DMZ tour. It was a winner, everyone came back educated and thoughtful as they had had a very interesting day. The guide was excellent and they got to see first-hand where the fighting happened, a very sobering thought.

Next stop Hoi An, and a hotel with swimming pool, brilliant!  Hoi An is yet another UNESCO spot, a lovely old colonial port that is now better known as the tailoring capital of Vietnam. Almost every shop can rustle you up new shoes, a DJ, T-shirt, skirt...you name it they can make it, in a day and at a very reasonable price to boot!   Now being a bloke I had not really taken on the full significance of this, but it was not lost on the ladies and at last count we have about 150 new items of handmade clothing amongst us! I must confess to new swimmers, a T-shirt and a rather dapper evening jacket of some distinction. A rather nice floral design on a lime green silk...ok awful, but I love it.

Hoi An also boasts some pretty good restaurants and cookery schools so pretty much everyone enrolled and a great morning of lemon grass, ginger and the like. The restaurant then also played host to Wendy’s birthday evening meal, where nearly everyone was in their new clothes.

Hoi An also gave a couple of the group the chance to get up close and photograph the morning catch. It is still an active port and so fishing is a big deal. Mandy, thanks for the photos, and Zoe were up well before farm O’clock at fishing O’clock around 5am to witness a morning in the life of the fishermen et al. Check the photos out, superb.

Another typical stinking hot day in… Hue

Oh hey hi guys, me again. Mama and Papa Bear are you there? This entry will not be as good as the last one but there we go. Just thought I could squeeze a quick update in as have a few mins. Have done most of my hotel bookings for the trip, accounts are in hand and the guys are off exploring on the DMZ tour today.
Vietnam propaganda
Propaganda is still alive and well in Vietnam
Hue sits on the banks of the Perfume river and so it was suggested that we sort a sunset meal on one of the not so traditional dragon boats. Had a chat with the delightful Thanh here in our hotel and a menu was rustled up and a very nice meal had, even if we did not get a sunset but a downpour. Little prayer “boats” with candle passengers were let go and wishes made, so a top night.

Saw the guys off this morning, paid up and arranged what I hope is a slightly larger bus for the trip to Hoi An tomorrow then nipped into the Citadel. What a great surprise it turned out to be. Relaxed, verdant greenery and a real sense of history. Set on the banks of the river and with a great park next to it, I found it a real pleasure to stroll around the old defences and just let my mind wander off into the imagined past. Hue is, well was the Royal seat for decades. On the way there passed loads of little stalls selling birds and fish, which I hope are to be taken home as pets and not as the main course...just never too sure in some of these places, thought re the French and frogs leg eating....did they get the idea from the colonial days out here?

Right well that is it, save a quick mention for Ben Buckley, Calypsoite and emerging comedian, I have signed photos, $5 a pop if you fancy, you heard the name here first. We will put a link to some of his comedy on this blog so you can check it out.  Oh and he has a gig in KL so we are all going to go along and have a great laugh with him, rather than at him as we do now...na only kidding. Yep maybe I should stick to what I do best, whatever that is and leave the comedy to Ben.

This is ‘nam, there are no rules.....

Toe to toe, eyeball to eyeball in canopy jungle the Odyssey group slip into Vietnam.

Oh hey hi out there so what news? Trust all is good. Have just heard that my eldest niece has just done brilliantly in her A levels so we are all needless to say very proud of her.

Ok so what news this end, well a fair bit actually so grab a coffee, get some cake...yeah you know what I am saying, settle in for a bit.

Last blog saw us still in Laid Back Laos. It was from here that we had to say goodbye to Calypso as she is not allowed into Vietnam. We, ok I, opted for the cross border bus. Not a bad sleeper bus, when it was running with the AC on so can someone please explain to me why they set a time for departure that sees us getting to the border so early that it is not yet open! They then turn engines and hence AC off for 4 hours. I mean come on people where is the common sense...ah ha that is it, never forget where you are! Come back Calypso all is forgiven!

Anyway we passed through relatively easily and got to Vinh. A place about all I can say is it is on the road between Hanoi and Hue, enough said. Well suppose the showers in the hotel were pretty good after the torturous bus.

From there we hired our own 29-seater bus, perhaps made for smaller people who have no luggage, and headed north to the manic and brilliantly vibrant Hanoi.  We normally stay in hotels but every now and then it is good to get back to basics and get into the travel scene. So in order to keep things upbeat and interesting we had booked into the massively busy, very central and totally funky Hanoi backpackers at 9 Ma May St. There were a few room issues but all in all a top spot, great place, where everyone had a great time. There was the BBQ with free beer one night, footie on the telly, lasagne that Steve had to admit got close to his home cooked one, loads of other travellers to talk to and of course all the great sites to see in Hanoi. A place that quite literally buzzes, check out the electrical wiring when you are in the old quarter, oh my god!

We split our stay here with a trip out to the UNESCO big boy Halong Bay. Think, nice warm ocean, brilliant food, I mean really tasty, private cabins, hell private boat, over 2000 islands dotted around, throw in some swimming, boat jumping, sundowners and there you have it. As we had not been before we opted for one night but would defo recommend two nights on board. We sorted through the hostel, they gave us our own boat and knocked $20pp off for us, result. Another great place, I mean my god it is so hard to explain all the great places we have seen on this trip.

I guess if you are reading this and wondering whether to go with Odyssey or not I would say do. Sure it has not all gone to plan, but maybe it has. The plan surely is to have the trip of a lifetime, tick, see some great sites, tick, meet great people, tick, have the most amazing time, tick....ok sales pitch over...just slipped that in as I am actually enjoying things so much have just asked Pete and Kirsten if I along with the ever reliable Mr Jim can run the Kathmandu to Istanbul trip next year, fancy coming? Well then get in touch with the office and sign up.

Ok get back on track CJ, yeah so got back to Hanoi for another night before dividing to conquer the trip to Hue, our current locale. Now I know adversity helps bring out the best in people but that does not mean to say that you relish the moment of adversity, here read sleeper bus journey, which was again the option due to the distance of the trip to Hue. Please note here that we do normally hire our own transport and had not done so here as reckoned the sleeper would be more comfortable for such a long journey.
Pensive
Jim looking pensive

Anyway so a few of the guys opted for the train down whilst the rest of us took another beating on the sweaty sleeper from hell. Actually truth be told I found it ok, but then I was wedged on a sleep platform with three ladies (and Jim). Colin and Wendy also seemed ok but then they came prepared with a bottle of red wine. The long and the short of it is here we are. Hue feels tiny after Hanoi, a rather pleasant change of pace as we have three days here to potter around the town, its ancient tombs, citadel and river..delightful.

Everyone has bomb burst and is off doing their own thing but will meet up on the last day as we head out to the DMZ for what will I feel be a rather moving and sad tour looking at war sites and the infamous tunnels, reminding us of the recent turbulent history of the country. Maybe it will also make us realise, or at least remind us, just how lucky we really are, not just being here on the trip but in our lives in general. We really do have a wealth that is beyond the grasp of so many and we have so many opportunities. Sad thing is I am not sure we all see this. We look down not up, think negative not positive. The glass is half empty not full. Why do we do this?

But fear not let us not end with doom and gloom. Take a look at the photos and enjoy. Loads of smiling faces and happy times. Now that is what works for me...brilliant memories to bounce around in my head for the rest of my life...fantastic. Laters CJ
